I occasionally ask and answer lab-based questions on r/labrats and answer questions on r/askscience.
I really think Reddit is a great environment for curious people to ask all sorts of science questions and provides an excellent medium for discussing science news and developments.
Some of my favourite contributions have been a post explaining developments in cancer immunotherapy that gained over 18000 upvotes, a discussion about whether plants receive significant energy from stars other than the sun and how molecular motors in cells work.
I'm a Scientist... Get Me Out Of Here is an outreach competition that connects secondary school classes to researchers via online chat sessions and Q&A. The students vote for their favourite researcher over the course of a few weeks.
I was lucky to be the winner in the Bismuth Zone, June 2016. I received £500 which was donated to the University of York outreach team. The profile I made explaining my research, and containing links to the various questions I answered can be found here.
